Boxer Zohai Rasheed
Having taken money from his teammate, Pakistani boxer Zohaib Rasheed has vanished in Italy, where he had arrived to participate in an Olympic qualifying tournament.
A Pakistani boxer has disappeared in Italy after stealing money from a teammate's bag, the Pakistan Amateur Boxing Federation said on Tuesday. Zohaib Rasheed has gone to Italy to take part in an Olympic qualifying tournament. A senior official of the federation said they had brought it to the notice of the Pakistan Embassy in Italy and also filed a police report about the incident.
Colonel Nasir Ahmed, the secretary of the national federation, expressed profound embarrassment for the federation and the country regarding Zohaib Rasheed's conduct. Rasheed, who was part of a five-member squad sent to participate in an Olympic qualifying tournament, has behaved in a manner deemed highly disappointing.
Zohaib had won a bronze medal in last year's Asian Boxing Championships and was regarded as a rising talent in Pakistan.
Nasir reported that during a training session, female boxer Laura Ikram left her room keys at the front desk, allowing Zohaib to take them. He then stole foreign currency from her purse before vanishing from the hotel.
"The police have been notified, and they are currently in pursuit, but he has not been in contact with anyone," Nasir stated.
This incident is not the inaugural occurrence where a Pakistani athlete has accompanied a national squad abroad and discreetly departed in pursuit of a brighter future.
